RESUMO

The ability to effectively host a guest speaker is an important but underemphasized aspect of career development in the physiological and broader biomedical sciences. Currently, there is scant information available to guide early-career scientists through this multifaceted, subtlety-filled process. In this Personal View on Training and Mentoring, I first describe the importance and benefits of hosting visiting speakers. I then discuss the many considerations involved in selecting an appropriate speaker and how to formulate the invitation to present. The key activities involved in planning and preparing for a speaker's visit are described next, including information that must be obtained from the speaker, the logistics of travel and lodging, constructing an effective itinerary, food/meals, and how the presentation will be advertised. I then delve into the essential components of host responsibilities during the visit: best practices for introducing speakers, other hosting duties associated with the presentation, tips for enhancing trainee interactions with the speaker, and keys to properly completing the visit on the right note. I next discuss events occurring after the visit, including speaker expenses, reimbursements, and honoraria. Last, the distinct aspects of virtual visits (i.e., remote presentations and meetings) compared with in-person visits are noted. Overall, this viewpoint is intended to provide a comprehensive guide to successfully hosting a guest speaker that should help advance the professional development of students, postdoctoral fellows, and other early-stage investigators.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This Personal View on Training and Mentoring provides a comprehensive guide to successfully hosting a guest speaker that should help inform and advance the professional development of students, postdoctoral fellows, and other early-stage investigators.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) images, which are acquired by X-ray computed tomography (CT), are widely used in medical diagnosis and treatment. Recently, advances in image processing functions of 3D image analysis workstations have made it possible to confirm actual procedures, approach lesions from directions that are not visible during surgery, and observe important structures by moving images on the workstation. This is useful in providing a variety of information on the pathology in advance. However, depending on the manipulation of the creator, the 3D images provided can vary greatly in terms of the omission of blood vessels and tumors, the background color, the colors of organs, and the presentation including rotation directions and angles. In this study, we decided to create a manual for 3D image creation using our web hosting service to standardize the 3D images to be provided. In particular, dynamic content using the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) was created and posted to provide a useful support tool for 3D image creation. In addition, the data can be accessed via the Internet within the hospital, making them widely available in clinical and educational settings.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the current study was the validation of a cloud-centralized audiometry system for clinical practice. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study design was used. STUDY SAMPLE: A convenience sample of patients (>10 years old) booked for follow-up appointments were invited to participate. Participants completed both conventional and online digital audiometry in a standard sound treated clinic space during a single clinic visit; tests were completed in random order. Data for both ears were included. Patients were from one of three audiological practices. RESULTS: A total of 41 participants completed both audiometric tests. Validation study results showed that the mean difference between the two audiometric test results remained within 5 dB HL for both air and bone conduction thresholds at all tested frequencies. CONCLUSIONS: Online digital audiometry has been demonstrated as a clinically accurate method for hearing assessment.

RESUMO

Refugees may be perceived as a burden to their host communities, and nutrition insecurity is a critical area of contention. We explored the relationship between refugee presence and a host community's resilience in nutrition outcomes in Cameroon. We also tested an analytical framework for evaluating community resilience during shocks. We used data from repeated cross-sectional Demographic and Health Surveys in Cameroon (2004 and 2011), data on refugee movement, and data on extreme climatic events, epidemics, and conflicts from multiple sources. Outcome variables were maternal underweight, maternal anaemia, and child underweight, anaemia, stunting and wasting. The exposure variable was residence within an area in which refugees settled. We used a genetic matching algorithm to select controls from the rest of the country after excluding areas experiencing concurrent shocks. We used a difference-in-differences analysis to compare outcomes between the exposed and control areas. The 2004 survey comprised 10,656 women and 8,125 children, while the 2011 survey comprised 15,426 women and 11,732 children. Apart from anaemia which showed a decreasing trend in both the refugee-hosting community and the rest of the country, all other indicators (wasting, underweight and stunting) showed increasing trends in the refugee-hosting community but decreasing trends in the rest of the country. The matched control group showed a similar trend of decreasing trend for all the indicators. Controlled comparisons showed no evidence of an association between changes in nutrition outcomes and the presence of refugees. These findings contest a common perception that refugees negatively impact hosting communities. The difference-in-differences analysis and an improved matching technique offer a method for exploring the resilience of communities to shocks.

RESUMO

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) suffer from low capacity and poor cyclability of cathode materials, which is due to the sluggish Mg2+ diffusion kinetics and large lattice strain. Here, a layer-interweaving mechanism in lamellar cathode to simultaneously facilitate Mg2+ diffusion and release Mg2+ -insertion strain is reported. In the Cu3 V2 O7 (OH)2 ·2H2 O (CVOH) cathode, Mg2+ diffusion highways are generated by the vertical interweaving of CVOH layers and V6 O13 layers that nucleate in CVOH during discharging, which are switchable by Mg2+ insertion/extraction. These highways enhance the Mg2+ diffusion coefficient by three orders of magnitude and release 50% Mg2+ -insertion strain. This enables CVOH to exhibit a high capacity of 262 mAh g-1 at high current density of 250 mA g-1 in aqua, and extremely low capacity loss of 0.0004% per cycle in the activated carbon//CVOH cell. This work inspires designing the magnesiation phase transformation of electrodes to resolve both kinetic and strain issues for high-performance RMBs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Threats of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to human health are on the rise worldwide. Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5), especially those emitted from hospitals, could serve as a substantial yet lesser-known environmental medium of inhalable antibiotic resistomes. A genome-centric understanding of the hosting bacterial taxa, mobility potential, and consequent risks of the resistomes is needed to reveal the health relevance of PM2.5-associated AMR from clinical settings. RESULTS: Compared to urban ambient air PM2.5, the hospital samples harbored nearly twice the abundance of antibiotic resistantance genes (ARGs, ~ 0.2 log10(ARGs/16S rRNA gene)) in the summer and winter sampled. The profiled resistome was closely correlated with the human-source-influenced (~ 30% of the contribution) bacterial community (Procrustes test, P < 0.001), reflecting the potential antibiotic-resistant bacteria (PARB), such as the human commensals Staphylococcus spp. and Corynebacterium spp. Despite the reduced abundance and diversity of the assembled metagenomes from summer to winter, the high horizontal transfer potential of ARGs, such as the clinically relevant blaOXA and bacA, in the human virulent PARB remained unaffected in the hospital air PM samples. The occurring patterns of ß-lactam resistance genes and their hosting genomes in the studied hospital-emitting PM2.5 were closely related to the in-ward ß-lactam-resistant infections (SEM, std = 0.62, P < 0.01). Featured with more abundant potentially virulent PARB (2.89 genome copies/m3-air), the hospital samples had significantly higher resistome risk index scores than the urban ambient air samples, indicating that daily human exposure to virulent PARB via the inhalation of PM2.5 was ten times greater than from the ingestion of drinking water. CONCLUSIONS: The significance of AMR in the studied hospital-emitting PM2.5 was highlighted by the greater abundance of ARGs, the prevalence of potentially virulent PARB, and the close association with hospital in-ward ß-lactam infections. A larger-scale multi-source comparison of genome-resolved antibiotic resistomes is needed to provide a more holistic understanding to evaluate the importance of airborne AMR from the "One-Health" perspective.

The changes that motherhood makes in women whatever they are psychic or biological, can be a remarkable and impacting experience for gestation. According to Melanie Klein, the psyche is a dynamic functioning that begins with the birth and ends with the death of the individual. In Hospital Psychology the listening and emotional support to these mothers are the key to slow the sufferings and the anxieties of the pre or postpartum. The present work is part of the activities developed in the obligatory stage of Psychology and Health. It was intended to characterize the development of the affectivity between mothers and their babies in the first moments postpartum, the thinking and the feelings of this puerperal, their perspectives and possible contraceptive preventions. The study was carried out in the maternity ward Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Paranaíba - Mato Grosso do Sul. Clinical observation, listening and semi-guided interviews were used as instruments. The participants were 23 women between puerperal and pregnant women. The study sought to identify the ties of affectivity and quality linked in the puerperal period. The main results suggest that family care in the puerperal period has an incidence of symbiotic relationship fueled by the influence of the family in the care of the mother and the baby. Low schooling and lack of access to information on contraception contribute to a larger number of offspring, pointing to the need to promote greater access to information on women's health services offered by the city's public policy.

RESUMO

Due to data restrictions and power system complexity issues, it is difficult to estimate grid capacity for solar PV on regional or national scales. We here present a novel method for estimating low-voltage grid capacity for residential solar PV using publicly available data. High-resolution GIS data on demographics and dwelling dynamics is used to generate theoretical low-voltage grids. Simplified power system calculations are performed on the generated low-voltage grids to estimate residential solar PV capacity with a high temporal resolution. The method utilizes previous developments in reference network modelling and solar PV hosting capacity assessments. The method is demonstrated using datasets from Sweden, UK and Germany. Even though the method is designed to estimate residential solar PV grid capacity, the first block of the method can be utilized to estimate grid capacity or impacts from other residential end-use technologies, such as electric heating or electric vehicle charging. This method presents:•A method for estimating peak demand based on population density and dwelling type.•Generation of low-voltage grids based on peak demand.•Sizing of transformers and cables based on national low-voltage regulations and standards.

RESUMO

Cr-hosting spinels are frequently formed during heating of solid wastes containing multiple metals, and its oxidation reaction (Cr(III) → Cr(VI)) is closely related with the toxicity of products. This study examined the reaction behaviors of Cr-hosting spinels (ZnCr2O4, CuCr2O4 and NiCr2O4) at high temperature and proposed possible oxidation mechanism. Cr-hosting spinels alone usually exhibit good thermal stability at high temperature. However, CaO can trigger the oxidation of Cr(III) in Cr-hosting spinels at 500-900 °C and ZnCr2O4 is easier to be oxidized than NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4 at same condition. The oxidation of Cr-hosting spinels is accompanied with the formation of CaCrO4 and divalent metal oxides (ZnO, NiO and CuO). The broken and rebuilding of CrO bonds are key steps for Cr-hosting spinels oxidation, blocking the combination of free Cr with Ca and O atoms maybe more effective approach for suppressing Cr(III) oxidation. Furthermore, CaO can trigger the reduction of CaCrO4 into a new Cr(V) compound (Ca5(CrO4)3O0.5) at 900-1200 °C. As the temperature rising to 1300 °C, CuO reacts with CaCrO4 to form CuCrO2, in which Cu(II) and Cr(VI) are reduced into Cu(I) and Cr(III) respectively. This study provided some new knowledge for the reaction behavior of Cr-hosting spinels when solid wastes containing Cr were treated at high temperature.

RESUMO

Underachieved capacity and low voltage plateau is ubiquitous in conventional aqueous magnesium ion full batteries. Such limitations originate from the electrochemistry and the low carrier-hosting ((de)intercalation) potential of electrode materials. Herein, via a strategy of enhancing the electrochemistry through carrier-hosting potential compensation, high-energy Mg2+ /Na+ hybrid batteries are achieved. A Mg1.5 VCr(PO4 )3 (MVCP) cathode is coupled with FeVO4 (FVO) anode in a new aqueous/organic hybrid electrolyte, giving reliable high-voltage operation. This operation enables more sufficient (de)intercalation of hybrid carriers (Mg2+ /Na+ ), thereby enhancing the reversible capacity remarkably (233.4 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 , 92.7 Wh kg-1 electrode , that is, ≥1.75-fold higher than those in conventional aqueous electrolytes). The relatively high Na+ -hosting potential of the electrodes compensates for the low Mg2+ -hosting potential and widens/elevates the discharge plateau of the full battery up to 1.50 V. Mechanism study further reveals an unusual phase transformation of FVO to Fe2 V3 and the low-lattice-strain pseudocapacitive (de)intercalation chemistry of MVCP.

BACKGROUND: Modern data-driven medical research provides new insights into the development and course of diseases and enables novel methods of clinical decision support. Clinical and translational data warehouses, such as Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside (i2b2) and tranSMART, are important infrastructure components that provide users with unified access to the large heterogeneous data sets needed to realize this and support use cases such as cohort selection, hypothesis generation, and ad hoc data analysis. OBJECTIVE: Often, different warehousing platforms are needed to support different use cases and different types of data. Moreover, to achieve an optimal data representation within the target systems, specific domain knowledge is needed when designing data-loading processes. Consequently, informaticians need to work closely with clinicians and researchers in short iterations. This is a challenging task as installing and maintaining warehousing platforms can be complex and time consuming. Furthermore, data loading typically requires significant effort in terms of data preprocessing, cleansing, and restructuring. The platform described in this study aims to address these challenges. METHODS: We formulated system requirements to achieve agility in terms of platform management and data loading. The derived system architecture includes a cloud infrastructure with unified management interfaces for multiple warehouse platforms and a data-loading pipeline with a declarative configuration paradigm and meta-loading approach. The latter compiles data and configuration files into forms required by existing loading tools, thereby automating a wide range of data restructuring and cleansing tasks. We demonstrated the fulfillment of the requirements and the originality of our approach by an experimental evaluation and a comparison with previous work. RESULTS: The platform supports both i2b2 and tranSMART with built-in security. Our experiments showed that the loading pipeline accepts input data that cannot be loaded with existing tools without preprocessing. Moreover, it lowered efforts significantly, reducing the size of configuration files required by factors of up to 22 for tranSMART and 1135 for i2b2. The time required to perform the compilation process was roughly equivalent to the time required for actual data loading. Comparison with other tools showed that our solution was the only tool fulfilling all requirements. CONCLUSIONS: Our platform significantly reduces the efforts required for managing clinical and translational warehouses and for loading data in various formats and structures, such as complex entity-attribute-value structures often found in laboratory data. Moreover, it facilitates the iterative refinement of data representations in the target platforms, as the required configuration files are very compact. The quantitative measurements presented are consistent with our experiences of significantly reduced efforts for building warehousing platforms in close cooperation with medical researchers. Both the cloud-based hosting infrastructure and the data-loading pipeline are available to the community as open source software with comprehensive documentation.

RESUMO

Determined in 1994, the legal framework for medically assisted reproduction has barely evolved since. French legislation is among the strictest in Europe. Sweeping changes are planned for the next review of the law on bioethics which should be put to a vote in 2020. The current ban on surrogacy should however remain in place.

RESUMO

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have great potential applications in display and solid-state lighting. Stability, cost and high operational efficiency are key issues governing the future commercial application of OLEDs. In this context, searching for multifunctional emitting materials with acceptable light-emitting and charge-transporting characteristics has gained increasing attention. For achieving high-performance and low-cost OLEDs, the suitable molecular design featured with different electronic and optical nature should be incorporated by combining the advantages of both functional units into the same molecules. This review highlights recent and current advances in developing bifunctional or multifunctional molecules, with the focus on structures, properties, and applications in OLEDs and organic laser.

The Primary Care is the main entrance to the health system and is the system that receives the demands of the general public, and especially women. Therefore, the need for qualified professionals is evidenced through listening. This study aims to analyze the acknowledgement of hearing as a therapeutic resource by health professionals who work in the health care of women in the Primary Care system. The results show discrepancies between what has been advocated by policies and the reality in health services, as well as in the professionals' discourse about listening, which demonstrates knowledge about the concept but not about the practice. Regarding the gender, there is an understanding of issues related to women, but not of the repercussions on health.

RESUMO

Wet processes of phosphoric acids produce untreated wastewater containing large amounts of fluoride leading to serious environmental problems. This paper reports fundamental studies on two lower rim functionalised calix[4]arene based receptors namely 5, 11, 17, 23 tetra-tert-butyl, 25, 27 bis [diethylphenylurea]ethoxy, 26, 28 dihydroxycalix[4]arene, 1 and 25, 27 bis[diethylphenylurea]ethoxy, 26, 28 dihydroxycalix[4]arene, 2 and their ionic interactions. It is shown that these receptors only interact with fluoride and phosphate in acetonitrile. Their receptive properties are higher for phosphate (2:1 anion:receptor complex) relative to fluoride (1:1 complex). However, thermodynamics shows that these receptors are more selective for fluoride relative to phosphate in the formation of the 1:1 complex. The pathway from fundamental studies to the use of these receptors for removing these anions from water has been tested. The receptive properties of 1 for phosphate are held when the extraction involves aqueous solutions containing individual ions. However, in mixtures containing both anions, the kinetics of the process and the selectivity of 1 for fluoride predominate and as a result, fluoride is better extracted than phosphate. The counter-ion effect on the removal process is assessed from Molecular Simulation studies. The removal of fluoride from phosphate is discussed taking into account existing technologies.

RESUMO

We describe the genesis, design and evolution of a computing platform designed and built to improve the success rate of biomedical translational research. The eTRIKS project platform was developed with the aim of building a platform that can securely host heterogeneous types of data and provide an optimal environment to run tranSMART analytical applications. Many types of data can now be hosted, including multi-OMICS data, preclinical laboratory data and clinical information, including longitudinal data sets. During the last two years, the platform has matured into a robust translational research knowledge management system that is able to host other data mining applications and support the development of new analytical tools.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present a tiny networked mobile platform, termed Tiny-Web-Thing (T-Wing), which allows the sharing of data-intensive content among objects in cyber physical systems. The object includes mobile platforms like a smartphone, and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms for Human-to-Human (H2H), Human-to-Machine (H2M), Machine-to-Human (M2H), and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. T-Wing makes it possible to host rich web content directly on their objects, which nearby objects can access instantaneously. Using a new mechanism that allows the Wi-Fi interface of the object to be turned on purely on-demand, T-Wing achieves very high energy efficiency. We have implemented T-Wing on an embedded board, and present evaluation results from our testbed. From the evaluation result of T-Wing, we compare our system against alternative approaches to implement this functionality using only the cellular or Wi-Fi (but not both), and show that in typical usage, T-Wing consumes less than 15× the energy and is faster by an order of magnitude.

Objective to understand the nurse's view on the use of the Manchester protocol and on the user population in the risk assessment of an Emergency Care Unit (ECU). Method qualitative case study based on Comprehensive Sociology of Daily Life; open interviews were carried out with 12 nurses who perform the risk assessment. Results there was a reversal of flow of users between the basic network and urgency/emergency services resulting in overcrowding in the ECU and work overload due to lack of information and effective communication in the Health System (public-private) to make users aware of the real function of the urgency/emergency service. We also identified flaws in the management of the ECU. Conclusion despite the challenges to perform risk assessment as a welcoming and equanimous strategy to meet the demand, the nurses believed that the Manchester protocol has brought safety to the practice and quality to the care provided.
